India scripted history at the 2025 ITTF World Youth Championships in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, where the U-19 boys’ team clinched a remarkable silver medal, the country’s best-ever finish at this global event. Although India went down 0–3 to a dominant Japanese side in the final, the campaign marked a new era for Indian table tennis and showcased the rise of young, fearless talent.

The Indian squad, Ankur Bhattacharjee, PB Abhinandh, and Priyanuj Bhattacharya, delivered a spirited performance throughout the event. Their journey to the championship match was defined by mental strength and exceptional tactical preparation. A major turning point came in the semifinal, where India defeated Chinese Taipei 3–2 in a nail-biting contest to secure a historic spot in the final.

While every player played a crucial role on the table, the team’s success was also shaped behind the scenes by strong coaching support, especially from Lucknow-based coach Parag Agarwal, who has been deeply involved in nurturing and sharpening this young generation of players. Parag Agarwal, who runs his own table tennis academy in Lucknow, has been instrumental in mentoring several of these players during national camps and preparatory sessions. His structured training methods, emphasis on discipline, and analytical approach have significantly contributed to the overall growth of the team.

Semifinal: The Match That Changed Everything

  • Abhinandh lost 1–3 to Kuo Guan-Hong, bringing the tie level.

  • Priyanuj restored the lead with a thrilling 3–2 victory over Lin Chin-Ting.

  • Kuo defeated Ankur 3–0 to force a decider.

  • Under pressure, Abhinandh delivered a flawless 3–0 win, taking India to their first-ever final.

Coach Parag Agarwal’s Key Role

A major factor in India's historic run was the strategic training ecosystem created by coaches like Parag Agarwal, who is recognized for shaping the mental and tactical readiness of several youth players through his academy in Lucknow.

Parag’s contributions include:

  • High-intensity training modules focused on stamina, footwork, and precision.

  • Tactical drills that prepared players to handle the fast-paced attacks typical of top Asian teams.

  • Close coordination with national coaching staff, ensuring players remained mentally sharp and competition-ready.

  • Long-term mentoring of young players, many of whom have emerged as national-level contenders.

Players and officials have repeatedly acknowledged that the solid grassroots and academy-level coaching, particularly from dedicated mentors like Parag, has strengthened India’s youth pipeline and played a direct role in this breakthrough.

Speaking on India’s first-ever entry into the U-19 boys’ final, Parag Agarwal said:

“This is just the beginning for our boys. Their discipline, match temperament, and ability to handle pressure at the world stage show how far Indian table tennis has come. I am proud that our training systems and grassroots work are contributing to this new generation of fearless players.”
